So my son was asked in class what he wanted to be when he grew up and he responded ” I want to be a director ” . Miles saw a special on TV that showed George Lucas directing one of the Star Wars movies and was completely fascinated by the process. The next day in class they told everyone that they had an assignment for career day related to the question. They were told in two weeks they wanted the class to come dressed as the profession they wanted to be in. They were then asked to have a description of the task they would be preforming in the profession prepared to present infront of the school. Sounds easy huh?

When Sarah told me about this I thought why dont we take it step farther. Lets make a short film showing off his ideas. I thought hard hard could it be. This is what I do for a living, I have the gear. I can show Miles how to do this.

The next weekend Miles and I were coming home from Starbucks and we were talking about the assignment. We were able to come up with the complete story line on the drive home from Starbucks to my house.

All I can say is that the end product was not as easy to produce as what I thought it might be.

Remember the Napster days of yore? Napster was the first chance many of us had to get our hands dirty trying a new crime – music piracy. Come to think of it, cyber-crime might be a more appropriate word, but at that point it was a word as under the radar as cyber-criminals. Record companies, however, didn’t seem as thrilled as consumer America with the inundation of “free” music. In July of 2001 Napster was forced to shut down. I recall being genuinely confused to learn that digital content could even be legislated. The term “digital rights management” was born and integrated into music everywhere, and a whole slew of new copyright laws were rushed into effect.

We’ve come a long way, haven’t we?
Some of the most successful software in the world is Open Source. Some of the most wildly profitable corporations in history are based entirely on internet technology. The fundamental nature of information and how we consume it is changing, and even Grandpa knows it.

Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails released their last album for free – and it topped the Amazon Bestseller charts. The exact same music was available(as it usually is) through illegal peer-to-peer networks as well as being available for download from the band’s own website. Fans paid for something they didn’t have to – and to posit that a fan of Nine Inch Nails doesn’t know about their website is just a little silly. It seems consumer America is finally starting to believe that digital real estate is every bit as valuable as the real thing. A quality product will always sell, regardless of the asking price. Could Trent Reznor, of all people, be paving the way for an entirely new business model?

I see this, all in all, as a truly encouraging trend. The American consumer is showing not only a refreshing amount of integrity, but some true cunning as well – how many major bands do you think will release their next CD only in traditional format?

Another year has come and as I sat down to write this blog post for the New Year I was thinking how can I articulate my hopes and resolutions for this year. How I can inspire those who come in contact with every day. I came across a post on another blog from one of my clients and thought I could not put it any better. Anyway that I try to word it I will try to say the same thing just not as well. So I figured I would let her say it. So thanks Corrie.

It is that time of the year again where we all lay out what we are going to change about ourselves. Whether it be loosing weight, getting better with remembering name (this is my personal one), or many other great ones that will no doubt lead to being what we consider a better person. Unfortunately, probably as in years past, things will go good for about the first few weeks, and then the insanity of everyday life takes over and gradually most of the well intentioned resolutions wind up at the bottom of a very long “to do” list.

However I read something in Self magazine that brought a whole new light to the idea of resolutions. The article spoke about creating inspirations for yourself, instead of ultimatums. Perhaps instead of getting upset about something that you did in 2008 and you are planning to resolve it in 2009, you might focus on the positive.

You could make a list of the things that you are proud of that you accomplished in 2008. This will help you to focus on the positive things that happened in 2008. This list does not have to be filled with huge accomplishments, good things happen everyday of our lives, we just do not always pay attention to them. Someone could be proud of the fact that their teenager woke up on time and make it to school without having to break a land speed record. It might be the fact that you remembered your spouses birthday without having to be reminded, or you finally figured out how to work a lawn mower all by yourself. Sometimes it is the little things that get us through day to day.

Instead of my usual resolution list which usually has loosing weight, getting to the gym, and being more organized on it; I am going to create a “I am proud of…” list so I can focus on the positives an start the new year off on a good foot. One of the items on my list will be that I learned how to post my first blog, this one. I have posted replies to my brothers blogs, but not my own.

As we go into 2009 with so many lingering questions, I plan on focusing on the gifts that I have been given. For example, the love of family and friends, the amazing people that I blessed to work with, and the gift of living in an amazing country where we have the freedom to be who we are that has been protected by so many brave and women. May each of you have a wonderful and safe New Years!

Corrie
